Pro Ana and Pro Mia websites on the rise
Friday, October 03, 2008 - 01:21 PM - 3 months ago   -  Blog  -  Health Business Blog
If you came here on a search for pro-anorexia or pro-bulimia websites please visit Getting Help for Anorexia and Bulimia at HealthyPlace.com instead (or at least first). I’ve been hearing for awhile about websites glamorizing or rationalizing eating disorders. I was a little shocked at first but then realized that it’s to be expected. The web attracts like-minded people of all sorts, including those with destructive or self-destructive ideologies and disorders. Still, it’s a disturbing phenomenon, one I was reminded of when I read a new report from web content security vendor Optenet , reporting a 470 percent increase in the number of sites devoted to a pro-anorexia or pro-bulimia message over the last couple of years. The company doesn’t know how much traffic these sites get; still the growth in the number of sites is an issue. I feel like a bit of a prude (or a New York Times writer) in the way I’m writing about this topic. I really don’t want to encourage people to visit these sites, though, so I’m not going to name them or link to them. I spent some time on Pro Ana and Pro Mia (as in buliMIA) sites to understand what they contain. They tend to have warning signs on the home pages telling people not to visit if they’re going to be judgmental or use the sites’ content to say anything negative about the Pro Ana and Pro Mia movement (as they refer to it). There are even legal warnings to scare people off. Inside the sites are supportive forums and tips. There are even BMI calculators with lower numbers than you’d normally see. It’s sometimes hard to tell what behaviors are being encouraged. For example is a person supposed to be pleased when they reach a BMI of under 17.5 “anorexic” but have gone too far once reaching 15 “emaciated”? Some of the tips were pretty disturbing, such as how to survive on water and vitamins, how to avoid eating, how to purge, how to maintain secrecy and how to deal with people probing into what you are doing. If you are a family member of someone who may have an eating disorder I encourage you to seek professional assistance even if the person you are worried about doesn’t want you to do so.

Wake up and smell the melamine
Friday, October 03, 2008 - 05:51 AM - 3 months ago   -  Blog  -  Health Business Blog
From MedPage Today (Chinese Melamine Contamination Prompts 21-State Recall ) The FDA has announced that a second distributor of instant coffee products made in China issued a recall because of possible melamine contamination. Sunny Maid Corporation is recalling Mr. Brown 3-in-1 powdered packets included in coffee mixes sold in 21 states. The product is packaged in plastic bags, each containing 30 packets. Canned products, the company said, were not affected by the recall… Last week, King Car Food Industrial recalled seven Mr. Brown instant coffee and tea products because of possible melamine contamination. For my take on the melamine scandal and its implications see Melamine: It’s not just for breakfast anymore .

Biden and Palin debate health care
Thursday, October 02, 2008 - 08:12 PM - 3 months ago   -  Blog  -  Health Business Blog
Just finished watching the Biden/Palin debate . I thought both did well enough. Palin performed more like she did in debates for Governor of Alaska (well) rather than in her interview with Katie Couric (poorly). The biggest logical disconnect for me was that she is in favor of the market and against regulation on the one hand but against “greed” and in favor of “massive oversight” on the other. There’s no free market without greed and no “massive oversight” without regulation. Biden controlled himself and was generally on point. The answers were too short to let anyone get himself or herself into trouble –or to get into any interesting detail for that matter. There was some discussion of health care, mostly along well-trod lines. Palin bragged about the $5000 tax credit McCain would offer to purchase health care, and Biden said that the credit wouldn’t make up for the $12,000 insurance policies that some people would lose once McCain started taxing corporate-sponsored health benefits. Biden criticized McCain’s support of deregulation of the banking industry and his conclusion that it was a good model for health care deregulation. Palin didn’t seem to have a response to that. The questions were too easy, so no one was stumped. I think, though, that Palin doesn’t know what an Achilles’ heel is. Either that or she doesn’t have one.
